Filing a Form 5500. It sounds simple, and yet there are 3 flavors of 5500 with 11 different supporting schedules, and handful of other associated forms like the 5558 and the 8955-SSA. Further, a 5500 reports plan information, and that plan information must be collected from multiple sources which may be internal to the plan sponsor or available from service providers to the plan. Paul Protos, Co-founder and co-owner, ATR, Inc
Paul Protos is a co-founder and co-owner of ATR, Inc. located in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. He has client service responsibilities across all aspects of retirement plan administration, and he provides forensic and remedial plan accounting services and compliance services to plans with operational and compliance challenges. Prior to co-founding ATR, Inc., Mr. Protos started his career with and became a Partner and the National Practice Leader for Defined Contribution Services for Coopers & Lybrand’s Actuarial, Benefits and Compensation Group (now PriceWaterhouseCoopers). Mr. Protos consults with companies of all sizes from one-participant plans to the plans of Fortune 500 companies regarding plan administration procedures, payroll and human resources operations, plan design, compliance consulting, vendor selection, and operational and administrative efficiency. He also has consulted with some of the industry’s leading recordkeepers and developers of defined contribution recordkeeping and benefit administration software to design valuation systems and regulatory compliance systems. Currently, Mr. Protos is an Enrolled Retirement Plan Agent (ERPA). He is a member of American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries (ASPPA), serving on the Reporting & Disclosure subcommittee of the Government Affairs Committee; the ASPPA Benefits Council of Greater Philadelphia serving on the Steering Committee of the Board; and a member of the Mid-Atlantic Pension Liaison Group of the IRS Joint TE/GE Council. Mr. Protos holds an M.S. from the University of Virginia, in Mathematics and a B.S. Tulane University, in Mathematics
